Target Audience: This repurposed session from the AMCP Annual Meeting 2016 is designed to provide insights and solutions for pharmacists who practice in managed care settings, to help them maintain and enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Activity Overview

Specialty drug approvals have exceeded traditional drug approvals since 2010, and this trend will likely continue for the next several years. The challenge for payers is to understand the impact of these newer agents on their patient populations and the implications to utilization, patient care and drug spend. Many specialty trend reports are now available, but the question is how are these trend models created? How do you ameliorate trends when unforeseen circumstances occur?

This session will focus on the “behind the scenes” of specialty drug trends, and show how trend models are created and adjusted when needed. In addition, this session will discuss the valuable lessons learned with specialty drug trends, including what to consider when creating models for specialty drugs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Summarize the importance of specialty drug trend models.
  2. Explain at least one model used commonly in specialty drug trend reports.
  3. Discuss at least two examples used for modeling specific specialty drugs.
  4. List at least one method used to ameliorate changes with specialty drug trends.
