Target Audience: This repurposed session from the AMCP Annual Meeting 2016 is designed to provide insights and solutions for pharmacists who practice in managed care settings, to help them maintain and enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Activity Overview

Given the increasing availability and utilization of specialty medications, payers are challenged with finding approaches to control costs while maximizing patient outcomes. One such approach has been to administer infused specialty medications at the site of care with the lowest cost. Sites of care can vary from a physician’s office to a hospital outpatient clinic to a patient’s home, differences that can determine the coverage between medical and pharmacy benefit. Important questions arise on this issue of coverage between the medical and pharmacy benefit, and how payers can structure benefits, cost sharing and reimbursement in various site of care scenarios.

This session will provide insight on the current issues payers face regarding site of care, and highlight practical examples of how payers have addressed site of care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the biggest hurdles associated with site of care for specialty drugs.
  2. Summarize effective benefit designs used with site of care.
  3. Identify best practices for successful implementation of a site of care program.
