Activity Overview

Although specialty medications currently account for only 1% of all prescriptions, they consumed nearly 40% of the total drug spend in 2015 and could consume 50% by 2018. Specialty medications increasingly represent lifesaving breakthroughs or provide substantial therapeutic improvements, so payers are left scrambling to find ways to cover them. Now more than ever, payers need to anticipate high-cost, high-impact agents and proactively design innovative management strategies before new specialty medications reach the market.

This session is devoted to promising specialty medications that are expected to receive FDA  approval within the next two years. Participants will leave armed with in-depth information about the efficacy, likely place in therapy, and probable budgetary impact of each of these medications—and ready to face the specter of spiraling drug costs.

Learning Objectives:  

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize high-impact specialty drugs in the 2017–2018 pharmaceutical pipeline.
  2. Summarize efficacy data for high-impact specialty pipeline drugs.
  3. Explain how emerging specialty pipeline drugs compare with currently available therapeutic options.
  4. Indicate the likely place in therapy and budgetary impact of emerging specialty pipeline drugs.

This activity consists of an audio recording, pre-test assessment questions (not required to pass or continue), post-test questions (required to pass with a score of 70% or higher) and a specific activity evaluation.
