Activity Overview

Are you looking to improve your ability to critically evaluate health care literature? Look no further!

This session focuses on analyzing and interpreting meta-analyses.  Participants will learn how to judge the quality of meta-analysis by considering the research questions asked, the methods used to select studies for inclusion, the analysis and interpretation of data, the assessment of heterogeneity, and the evaluation of publication bias. Using examples from published meta-analyses, participants will practice reading forest plots and translating results to real-world health care.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1.  Discuss the role, strengths, and limitations of meta-analysis in comparative effectiveness research.
  2.  Describe the major components of high-quality meta-analysis.
  3.  Explain how to interpret meta-analysis results presented in a forest plot.
  4.  Review a published meta-analysis and recognize potential limitations for applying results to patient care.
