Prescription opioids are contributing to an epidemic of opioid addiction and overdose that affects every age group, economic class, and geographic region in the United States. In 2014, nearly 2 million Americans met diagnostic criteria for a past-year prescription opioid use disorder, and at least 14,000 people died from a prescription opioid overdose. Although drugs and prescribing practices are at the root of this epidemic, they also can help to control it—through the use of medication-assisted treatment for people with opioid use disorders and the administration of naloxone to reverse opioid overdose.
This session will review the latest thinking about combatting the prescription opioid epidemic, with a focus on how it applies to managed care practitioners.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Restate key recommendations from the 2016 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain.
- Recognize the current role and future potential of abuse-deterrent opioid formulations.
- Identify ways to optimize the use of medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder.
- Discuss the availability and use of naloxone for reducing opioid overdose fatalities.
