Activity Overview

As de­fined by the FDA, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are “any report of the status of a patient’s health condition that comes directly from the patient, without interpretation of the patient’s response by a clinician or anyone else.” Although PRO measures originally were designed to support population research, use in clinical research soon followed. More recently, they are being used to inform and guide patient-centered care, as well as clinical, quality and health policy decision-making. They also are being used in quality-of-care assessments, by being incorporated into performance measures as part of the broader accountability and performance improvement landscape.  This session will provide an introduction to PROs and their use in research, clinical practice, and performance assessment. 

Learning Objectives:  

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Recognize the various definitions and terms related to patient-reported outcomes (PROs).

2. Explain the difference between PROs, quality-of-life, and quality of care measures.

3. Indicate how PROs data can be used in health care decision-making.

4. Discuss how managed care organizations can interpret and use PROs data included in prescription drug labeling or product promotion. 

Schedule of Educational Activity

This activity consists of an audio recording, pre-test assessment questions (not required to pass or continue), post-test questions (required to pass with a score of 70% or higher) and a specific activity evaluation.
