Activity Overview

While randomized, controlled clinical trials remain a gold standard for payers to evaluate treatment efficacy, more and more attention is being focused on the collection of real-world data for health care decision-making. Some continue to question the validity and quality of this data, casting doubt about the role real-world data and evidence will ultimately play. However, with more risk-based contracts and regulatory interest in the evaluation of real-world data, payers need a good understanding of how this data and evidence could impact health care decision-making in the future.  This session is being developed in collaboration with the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR), and will provide an overview and potential uses of real-world data, and ongoing initiatives to improve the quality of this data. In addition, hear how one payer has used real-world evidence as part of their formulary decision-making process. 

Learning Objectives:  

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Identify at least three benefits and challenges with the use of real-world data in health care decision-making.

2. Describe potential regulatory actions that may support the role of real-world data in the evaluation of medical treatments and devices.

3. Summarize initiatives that will improve the quality of real-world data.

4. Discuss how one payer used real-world data as part of their formulary decision-making process.

Schedule of Educational Activity

This activity consists of an audio recording, pre-test assessment questions (not required to pass or continue), post-test questions (required to pass with a score of 70% or higher) and a specific activity evaluation.
