Target Audience: Pharmacists who practice in managed care settings.
Stakeholders in the specialty pharmacy industry have carved out a niche for themselves in the treatment of conditions requiring high cost, high touch medications. As a result, patients have access to pharmacy personnel educated in uncommon complex disease states, unique support programs, and a wide range of drug products that may not be as readily available in other community pharmacy settings. Unfortunately, this can also result in a disconnected model of care due to lack of access to pertinent medical or pharmacy records from health systems, providers and community pharmacies. This session will present a health plan’s assessment of challenges to managing specialty pharmacies, and discuss the pharmacy network created to optimize the strengths of each type of participating pharmacy, such as specialty pharmacies, health-system pharmacies and community pharmacies.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Identify the newer stakeholders interested in gaining access to restricted distributions.
2. Describe how health plans can approach the development of specialty pharmacy networks.
3. Describe the similarities and differences between the types of pharmacies that might be included in a specialty pharmacy network.
4. Discuss the challenges faced by payers when managing specialty pharmacy networks.

This activity consists of an audio recording, pre-test assessment questions (not required to pass or continue), post-test questions (required to pass with a score of 70% or higher) and a specific activity evaluation.
