Activity Overview

Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), a recent facet of managed care, have rapidly expanded across the United States, further shifting the health care industry’s focus from fee for service to value.  As this new model continues to expand, health plans continue to explore their relationship with ACOs in the evolving marketplace.  This session will examine the ACO structure and discuss similarities and differences between ACOs and traditional managed care organizations. Participants will discuss the challenges and opportunities for health plans to date in working with ACOs to improve outcomes and lower costs.

Learning Objectives:  

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Explain the similarities and differences in managing care between accountable care organizations (ACOs) and health plans.

2. Describe how ACOs are structured.

3. Identify the challenges and opportunities for health plans in working with and developing ACO   

4. Discuss outcomes seen in cost savings and changes in quality of care.

This activity consists of an audio recording, pre-test assessment questions (not required to pass or continue), post-test questions (required to pass with a score of 70% or higher) and a specific activity evaluation.
