The prevalence of copay cards for high cost specialty pharmacy drugs continues to grow. These controversial programs place payers, specialty pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers at odds. Higher copays, which used to deter patients from higher cost drugs, are now being o‑ set by these copay programs, leaving payers responsible for higher drug costs. As a result, payers are exploring new means of shifting costs to beneficiaries, while specialty pharmacies are trying to determine where their fiduciary responsibilities lie. What is the outlook for copay programs? What are the strategies to manage access to these programs? What is the impact on actuarial and underwriting models? What about the impact for payer contracts and rebates? Where can payers, manufacturers and specialty pharmacies and common ground? This session provides an overview of today’s landscape based on original research with key stakeholders and explores the future of these copay programs.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Summarize the types of copay programs currently offered for specialty drugs and describe how these programs are likely to change in the future.
2. Explain the impact copay cards have on actuarial models and underwriting and discuss what effect changes to copay programs would have on cost and utilization.
3. Outline management strategies used to address copay cards and detail the emerging tools and techniques available for guiding access to these programs.
