Activity Overview

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that an increasing number of Americans—currently, 1.4 million adults— identify as transgender. Consequently, it is becoming increasingly important for managed care pharmacy teams to help address health care gaps for this patient population. Amida Care, a Special Needs Medicaid Managed Care Plan in New York City, is working to fill some of these gaps for its patients.

This session will focus the discussion on a managed care pharmacy team’s experience in developing a formulary for a transgender program  that  meets  both  the  health  care  needs  of  its  members and New York State regulatory requirements. In addition, faculty will establish a baseline of  knowledge needed to develop a transgender health program and formulary, including demographic and epidemiologic data, common and medical terminology, and identification of appropriate clinical evidence. Faculty will also discuss nationwide regulatory and legislative trends relating to transgender-related health care and services coverage.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Restate the basic terminology and definitions required for managed care pharmacy teams in managing a transgender health program.

2. Discuss how managed care pharmacy teams can identify credible clinical evidence to assist in developing an evidence-based transgender formulary.

3. Explain the humanistic needs of the transgender population and what is required to improve the managed care pharmacy teams’ communication and relationship with transgender patients.

4. Identify the barriers and opportunities managed care pharmacy teams face in managing the health care of the transgender patient population.
