Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects approximately 1.3 million U.S. adults and creates a heavy psychological burden for patients because symptoms can occur spontaneously. Those with IBD have increased rates of anxiety and/or depression, and they report the disease significantly affects their lifestyle. IBD is associated with medication burden, restrictive diets for symptoms management, modifying behaviors to manage or mitigate triggers, reduction inability to work and the need to be in close proximity to toilets; all of which negatively impact the patient’s health-related quality of life (HRQOL). With IBD having an estimated yearly direct cost of $14.6 billion to $31.6 billion and an additional heavy impact on society, this session will explore methods to improve HRQOL for patients with IBD, outcomes, and improve cost.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the impact of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on patient health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and total costs of care.
- Describe the current challenges and opportunities in IBD disease management.
- Explain an innovative IBD management strategy utilizing value-based care for improvement in patient outcomes and cost management
