Target Audience: Pharmacists who practice in managed care settings.

Activity Description:

Real-time pharmacy benefits (RTPB) deliver real-time access to medication pricing and restriction information at the point of prescribing. This allows providers to engage in shared decision making with patients and to prescribe the most appropriate and cost-effective treatment for patients based on information sent by the payer. The real-time pharmacy benefit query delivers up-to-date information that is specific to the medication being prescribed and the patient’s pharmacy benefit that may otherwise be missed by outdated benefit-level formulary and coverage information in the electronic health record.  This session will give an overview of the implementation of real-time pharmacy benefits by an integrated health care organization that includes an overview of operational workflows for blending electronic prior authorization with real-time pharmacy benefits. Additionally, it will look at barriers encountered during implementation, and real-world results, including the impact on prior authorization workloads for the payer and providers.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe how real-time pharmacy benefits information is exchanged between the electronic health record and payers and is used by providers.
  2. Recognize advantages that an integrated health care organization has when implementing real-time pharmacy benefits.
  3. Discuss the impact that real-time pharmacy benefits have on prior authorization workloads from both a provider and payer perspective.
  4. Identify opportunities for continued improvement of real-time pharmacy benefit transactions.
