Target Audience: Pharmacists who practice in managed care settings.
The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy developed the AMCP Format for Formulary Submission as a template and guidance that has become one of the most widely recognized standards for requesting and receiving clinical and economic evidence from manufacturers. The Format is used to evaluate the value of pharmaceutical products, tests, and devices and help health care decision-makers with
formulary decision-making and other population health decision-making. In 2019, AMCP’s Format Executive Committee reviewed and drafted the sixth revision of the AMCP Format. This update aligns with recent guidance from the Food and Drug Administration on manufacturers’ communication of
information about unapproved products and unapproved uses of approved products to payers, formulary committees, or other similar entities. This latest update to the Format explains how to present information and evidence throughout the continuous life-cycle of products. This session will provide a brief historical perspective on the AMCP Format with a focus on the recent updates proposed in Format Version 4.1. In addition, the session will discuss how the Format is applied to managed care practice and some of the issues considered during the development of this new version.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Summarize at least two updates made to the AMCP Format 4.1 from the previous version.
- Identify at least one application of dossiers developed according to the AMCP Format in managed care pharmacy practice.
- Explain the different perspectives on issues faced during the development of the AMCP Format version 4.1 such as sharing drug pricing information prior to regulatory approval and manufacturer proactive versus reactive communications as related to formulary information.
