Activity Description:

Cancer is one of the world’s most pressing health care challenges, with more than 14 million people receiving a cancer diagnosis each year. That said, significant biopharmaceutical advances have been made across the spectrum of cancers in the past decade. The death rate from cancer in the United States has declined by 29% from 1991 to 2017, including a 2.2% drop from 2016 to 2017, the largest single-year drop ever recorded, according to annual statistics reported by American Cancer Society. However, the downstream impact of recent innovation has led to significant increases in drug spending, which is expected to reach $600 billion in 2023. In order to sustain access to these innovative therapies, new reimbursement models are needed to balance risks between payors and manufacturers, including the use of innovative value-based or outcome-based contracting strategies.

This session will review the most impactful advances in cancer research, highlighting advances that truly show progress against cancer. While costs will be highlighted, the focus of this presentation will be balancing value, cost and risk with the consideration of continuous rise in oncology innovation. Participants will recognize what value-based reimbursement models are currently available and leave prepared to apply these principles to their own reimbursement policies.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the current spend and advances in cancer treatment that will guide the market in the next five years.
  2. Discuss the potential value- and outcome-based strategies to address the rapidly rising cost of cancer agents.
  3. Identify other opportunities in oncology to help offset the rising cost of innovation.
