Target Audience

This knowledge-based activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists in managed care settings.

Program Description

Heart failure (HF) is one of the costliest diseases in the United States. Due to treatment advances and an aging population, the prevalence of Americans living with HF is increasing, leading to increased health care costs. Acute heart failure syndrome is one of the main contributors to the high cost of HF management, as it often leads to hospitalizations and rehospitalizations. Technology and medications that reduce hospitalizations are of special interest to potentially reduce overall costs.

This session will look at the heart failure treatment pipeline, including pharmacologic and technological advances, as well as the current evidence for reducing hospitalizations, morbidity, and mortality associated with heart failure.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Identify novel component(s) of heart failure (HF) therapies in the FDA pipeline.
2. Examine new technology that can aid in the management of HF.
3. Summarize evidence of HF interventions shown to reduce hospitalizations, morbidity, and mortality.
