Drug Importation – What You Need to Know about State and Manufacturer Importation Plans

Session Description:

Drug importation has experienced renewed interest in the past two years. Several states passed legislation to allow importation of drugs, specifically from Canada, and are moving forward with proposals to the federal government to begin importing drugs. The federal government has also granted manufacturers the ability to import their own drugs — drugs that were originally intended for sale in other countries.

What does this mean for pharmacists? What impact will it have on the supply chain and costs for medications? What will the role of pharmacists be in drug importation? Join this session to find out!

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe the state pathway and requirements for drug importation.
  • Summarize the manufacturer pathway for drug reimportation
  • Discuss the impact importation pathways have on pharmacists and pharmacy operations.
  • Explain the methodology for pricing of drugs imported from Canada.
