COVID-19 and the Impact on Mental Health

Session Description:

There are direct and indirect consequences of coronavirus (COVID-19) on mental health for both patients and health care providers. In addition, lockdowns and shielding have led to disruptions in mental health and substance abuse services across the United States. Organizations are responding to these disruptions in multiple innovative ways including telemedicine, and training for health care providers. Management of mental health services and policies are changing at high rates as health conditions worsen due to pandemic-related stressors such as grief over the loss of loved ones, isolation, increased substance use as a coping mechanism, and financial concerns. Furthermore, COVID-19 itself is associated with neurological and mental complications such as delirium/encephalopathy, agitation, insomnia, anxiety, and depression.

During this session, participants will learn about COVID-19-related risks to mental health, and changes in mental health services, substance use programs, and health care reimbursement.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe COVID-19-associated mental health complications on patients and health care providers.
  • Identify COVID-19-related changes to mental health services and substance use programs.
  • Describe recent innovative health care delivery programs and reimbursement changes.
