Biosimilars’ Impact on Health Care Trends and Costs

Course Description:

The first biosimilar agents were approved in 2015-2016, yet product uptake was slow and another half decade before utilization increased in the United States. Utilization trends of biosimilars in comparison to the reference product are shifting and managed care professionals are challenged with formulary placement strategies, the true costs of the products, and contracting availability. The expansion of biosimilar pipeline products and targeted diseases expected to launch in the U.S. in the next two to five years has payers curious about the market impact.

During this session, the faculty will focus on shifting utilization trends for the biosimilar products, market launch cost trends, 340B pricing, and barriers and tactics influencing biosimilar uptake..

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Identify utilization and cost trends for biosimilars in the United States to be used in the development of cost-effective biosimilar formularies.
  2. Recognize pipeline biosimilar products and their potential utilization and costs.
  3. Identify the barriers to utilization of biosimilar products and effective tactics to overcome them.
