Prepping for the Future: HIV PrEP Updates for Managed Care Professionals

This activity is supported by independent educational grants from ViiV Healthcare Corporation.

Course Description:

Advancements in HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) pharmacotherapy are driven by unmet preventative needs in at-risk patient populations. Though new infections have declined in the U.S. by 8% from 2015 to 2019, HIV continues to demonstrate a disproportionate impact on historically marginalized communities with respect to individual factors such as race, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic status, and more. PrEP therapies demonstrate significant benefit in HIV transmission, and new long-acting therapies introduce adherence advantages. However, several barriers to care still exist in terms of access and adherence.

This session will provide managed care professionals with an overview of existing and emerging pipeline PrEP therapies, insight on the eligibility criteria for PrEP coverage and therapy approaches, and strategies to address health disparities and patient access to care issues.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss existing CDC PrEP therapy guidelines and treatment benefits and challenges with current management options.
  2. Identify long-acting PrEP therapies currently in the development pipeline and their potential role in PrEP management.
  3. Explain at least two differences between existing and new PrEP management options.
  4. Describe potential access to care issues that might arise in individuals at high risk of contracting HIV.
  5. Discuss health disparity issues for patients living with HIV and at-risk populations.
