Program Description

Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States, with 2022 setting a record for deaths due to cardiovascular disease in the US at close to 1 million. LDL-cholesterol is a major modifiable cardiovascular risk factor which continues to be poorly controlled and Lp(a) is a powerful, emerging risk factor that is under-recognized and under-appreciated.

The Family Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to research, education, and advocacy and as part of our ongoing research efforts, we have examined the state of LDL-C control among 38M Americans at high and very high-risk for cardiovascular disease in the proprietary Family Heart Database. This session will provide an update on current LDL-C treatment guidelines, Lp(a) screening recommendations, and key findings and insights from an analysis of the Family Heart database.

Learning Objectives

  • Individualize treatment of LDL-C to achieve more aggressive goals in patients with a history of ASCVD and increased risk for recurrent events, incorporating the latest data, clinical guidelines, and expert recommendations.
  • Incorporate Lp(a) testing into routine risk evaluation to better define a patient's risk for future cardiovascular events.
  • Take away potential solutions which could be implemented to improve awareness, treatment, and outcomes for people at high risk for cardiovascular disease.
