12-1pm ET
Unlocking the Value of Patient-Centered Research for Payer Decision Making
There is growing recognition that involving patients in health care research and decision-making can improve health care delivery and quality across a range of decision-making contexts. However, several uncertainties surrounding patient-centered research, including how payers use it, may undermine future investment. This can result in missed opportunities to engage patients in meaningful research and improve health outcomes. This session will examine the opportunities and challenges associated with generating and using patient-centered research from multiple stakeholder perspectives, including payers, researchers, and policymakers. It will also share key insights from a national effort to engage public and private payers in discussions about using patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) in their decision-making. In addition, actionable strategies will be presented for increasing the use and relevance of patient-centered research.
2-3pm ET
Preparing for the Financial and Practical Impacts of Pharmaceutical Tariffs
Tariffs are dominating the front pages of newspapers and are at the top of mind for many Americans (and their wallets). Though prescription drugs have historically been excluded from tariffs, the threat to expand tariffs to the pharmaceutical supply chain has increased. This session will provide an overview of how tariffs work, the unique vulnerabilities of different aspects of the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain to tariffs, and how manufacturers, payers, and providers are reacting to and managing the future risk of tariffs.
4-5pm ET Satellite Symposium
Sponsored and presented by Pharmacy Times Continuing Education, separate registration required. Click here to register.
This activity is supported by an educational grant from Astrazeneca.
Hyperkalemia is an electrolyte disorder that can result in serious cardiac complications. It can occur in the inpatient or outpatient setting and is more likely to occur in patients with comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, or other cardiovascular conditions especially when receiving renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors. Hyperkalemia increases morbidity, mortality, and health care costs in these patient populations. Although potassium binders have been available for decades, traditional therapies such as sodium polystyrene sulfonate are limited by safety and tolerability concerns. Newer agents offer improved efficacy and safety profiles, making it essential for managed care pharmacists to understand their role in both acute and chronic hyperkalemia management. This activity will explore treatment options for acute and chronic hyperkalemia including real world use and practice patterns, identify the economic challenges associated with the condition, and review approaches to for developing cost-effective, patient-centered coverage policies. With a greater understanding of hyperkalemia and the treatment landscape, managed care pharmacists can expand patient access to appropriate treatments, maximize patient outcomes, and improve health care resource utilization.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the etiology and patient populations at higher risk for the development of hyperkalemia and its related complications if left untreated.
- Analyze available efficacy and safety data for newer oral potassium-binding medications for the swift and long-term management of hyperkalemia.
- Examine approaches managed care pharmacists can employ to ensure cost-effective, patient-centered treatment plans.
