The AMCP Governance Essentials Training Program is a comprehensive learning experience designed to prepare current and future leaders to effectively serve in governance roles across the organization. This program provides a practical understanding of how AMCP operates, the responsibilities of volunteer leadership, and the principles that guide effective governance in a complex healthcare environment. Participants will build essential skills in strategic thinking, ethical decision-making, fiduciary oversight, and financial stewardship, equipping them to contribute meaningfully to AMCP’s mission and long-term impact on managed care pharmacy.

Module 1: Introduction to AMCP

This module provides an overview of AMCP’s mission, structure, and impact within managed care pharmacy. Participants will gain insight into how the organization operates, including its governance framework, committees, strategic priorities, and member engagement ecosystem.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe AMCP's mission, purpose, and role in managed care pharmacy.
  • Explain AMCP's governance structure, including Board and committee roles.
  • Identify key organizational entities, programs, and member resources.
  • Understand how members engage with AMCP across platforms and programs.

Module 2: Strategic Thinking for Governance Leaders

This module explores the mindset required for effective governance leadership, emphasizing strategic thinking, foresight, and disciplined decision-making. Participants will learn how Boards evaluate trends, set priorities, and focus on long-term organizational impact.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish between strategic governance and operational thinking.
  • Apply strategic thinking principles including foresight and trade-offs.
  • Identify key external and industry trends impacting AMCP.
  • Formulate forward-looking questions to guide Board discussions.

Module 3: Nonprofit Governance and Ethics

This module introduces the legal and ethical foundations of nonprofit governance. Participants will learn how policies, governing documents, and compliance frameworks support ethical leadership, accountability, and risk management within AMCP.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the legal and structural framework of nonprofit governance.
  • Identify key governance documents (bylaws, policies, OPPM) and their purpose.
  • Apply compliance principles related to conflict of interest, antitrust, and confidentiality.
  • Recognize how ethical governance supports organizational integrity and trust.

Module 4: Board Roles and Responsibilities

This module outlines the purpose, authority, and expectations of the AMCP Board and volunteer leaders. Participants will develop a clear understanding of fiduciary duties, governance responsibilities, and how effective Boards operate and make decisions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define fiduciary responsibilities (duty of care, loyalty, and obedience).
  • Differentiate Board responsibilities from CEO and staff roles.
  • Describe effective Board behaviors, culture, and engagement expectations.
  • Identify pathways and expectations for AMCP Board service.

Module 5: Nonprofit Business and Financial Management

This module focuses on financial governance and organizational sustainability. Participants will learn how AMCP is structured and funded, and how the Board exercises financial oversight through budgeting, reporting, and risk management.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand AMCP's business model and organizational entities.
  • Interpret core nonprofit financial statements and reports.
  • Describe the Board's role in budget approval and financial oversight.
  • Identify financial risks and governance responsibilities related to sustainability.
  • Recognize the role of Finance and Audit Committees in supporting governance.

Please note that this session is not accredited for continuing pharmacy education credit.
