Course Description

A growing number of therapeutic options for retinal diseases are on the market which reflect disease-targeted therapeutic advances for age-related wet macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and diabetic retinopathy. In navigating the complexities of managing patients with retinal disease, it is imperative to recognize the multifaceted barriers that hinder optimal care delivery. Key challenges encompass understanding its substantial burden on individuals and society and addressing the prevailing health disparities that impede equitable access to treatment. Faculty for this session will provide an overview of the latest drug advancements in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and diabetic retinopathy to align managed care strategies that support appropriate and timely treatment and bridge access and utilization of care for marginalized groups.

Pharmacists who practice in managed care settings.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Define age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), and diabetic retinopathy (DR) and its appropriate treatment, including emerging therapeutic options, distinguishing clinical efficacy, safety, and dosing.
  2. Discuss managed care approaches to formulary and drug utilization within the medical benefit to address access to equitable care and improve outcomes for retinal disease, specifically AMD, DME, and DR.
  3. Recognize retinal disease's financial and societal impact on existing health disparities within the disease state, focusing on AMD, DME, and DR.
