Program Description
Vitiligo is more than a cosmetic concern. It is a chronic, autoimmune disease characterized by the progressive loss of melanocytes, leading to depigmented patches on the skin—the body’s most visible and socially expressive organ. NSV reflects underlying immune dysregulation and can be associated with systemic comorbidities such as autoimmune thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, pernicious anemia, and alopecia areata. Beyond the physical manifestations, NSV carries a profound psychological burden, with increased rates of anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal. These interconnected challenges not only affect patient quality of life but also contribute to broader healthcare utilization and underscore the need for holistic, long-term management strategies.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the pathophysiology and epidemiology of nonsegmental vitiligo (NSV).
- Understand the NSV-related physical comorbidities (e.g., autoimmune thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, alopecia areata) and the psychological impacts (e.g., depression, anxiety, social stigma) that compound disease burden.
- Describe the clinical need for additional interventions including advanced systemic therapies in NSV that address the underlying immunologic dimensions and unpredictability of the disease.
- Recognize the value to payers and patients of achieving durable repigmentation and disease stability, including improvements in patient outcomes/quality of life.
