Program Description

Alopecia Areata is more than a cosmetic hair loss concern. It is a chronic, autoimmune disease characterized by unpredictable, non-scarring hair loss that can affect the scalp, face, and body. While its most visible manifestation is hair loss, AA reflects underlying immune dysregulation that may extend beyond hair loss. If left untreated or poorly managed, AA can be associated with a range of comorbidities—including Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis. The psychosocial toll of AA, which may include anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress, social stigma, and social withdrawal, compounds the disease burden and can adversely impact patient outcomes and quality of life.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the pathophysiology and epidemiology of Alopecia Areata (AA).
  • Understand potential AA-related physical comorbidities (e.g., Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), vitiligo, atopic dermatitis) and psychological impacts (e.g., depression, anxiety, social withdrawal) that compound disease burden.
  • Describe the clinical rationale for early use of advanced systemic therapies in severe AA patients, with emphasis on immune modulation, hair regrowth durability, and patient-centered care.
  • Recognize the potential implications to payers and patients of achieving and sustaining hair regrowth in AA, including improvements in quality of life, mental health, and long-term disease management.
