Program Description

Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is a rare, chronic, progressive, autoimmune, cholestatic liver disease characterized by gradual destruction of the intrahepatic bile ducts leading to the development of cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Cholestatic pruritus can be a debilitating effect of PBC, which is underrecognized and undertreated. Cholestatic pruritus is an intense itch that can lead to excoriation, sleep deprivation, and worsening cognition. This manifestation of PBC is not routinely assessed. Current guidelines recommend therapies for cholestatic pruritus that commonly have response rates <50% and may be poorly tolerated. This session will focus on the disease burden of cholestatic pruritus in PBC, the mechanism of disease, which differs from PBC itself, review guideline recommendations, and apply the recommendations via a case study.
